5 steps to a healthy you
Eat healthily, but avoid fad diets Catherine: There’s always a new fad diet that says you should only eat cabbage soup, avoid red things or just eat low-fat foods, even though they are full of sugar. People never last long on them. The truth is that all the body really needs is clean, healthy food that grows on trees or grows in the ground, lean protein, healthy fats and a rainbow of colours of fruits and vegetables. Make a promise to eat and drink clean and you’ll soon notice a surge in energy. Fad diets will just sap you of energy and the enthusiasm to eat healthy.
Find an exercise that you enjoy and stick to it
Elaine: No matter how strong your willpower is you need to find a form of exercise that you enjoy. Why? Imagine you are having a lazy day and don’t fancy getting off the sofa. The first thing your brain will do is say, ‘Let’s not bother, you don’t really enjoy it anyway.’ And you listen and don’t bother. Try new things and listen to how you feel – you’ll know pretty quickly whether you enjoy it. Everybody likes different things, so don’t be afraid to do something by yourself if your friends don’t want to join you.
Embrace your natural body shape and do the best for it Catherine: We all have bits of our body that we don’t like, but we should always try to look for the positives. Start finding a way to embrace it. Wear clothes that work for your shape, chat to a nutritionist for a bespoke meal plan, and find a good personal trainer to show you the exercises that will work specifically for your body shape. Most importantly, however, remember that your body is what makes you unique and make a vow to stop the cycle of negative body image.
Don’t beat yourself up if you have a bad day Elaine: Everybody has a bad day – but those that are successful at being healthy in the long term know how to pick themselves back up again. Give yourself incentives, such as leaving a picture of a dress you’d like to wear when you reach your target weight in your diary or making a nail appointment that will be a reward for being healthy the rest of the week. If you’ve had a bad food day, write down your healthy eating plan for the rest of the week, which will give you incentive to stick to it. Tomorrow can and will be better.
Surround yourself with healthy people Catherine: It’s human nature to follow what others are doing, so if you are eating unhealthy foods, your kids will naturally do the same. So by surrounding yourself with healthy, like-minded people, it’s easier to stay on the right track. If you know people in your exercise class or at the gym, arrive early to have a chat with them or go for a peppermint tea afterwards. Forming a social life around your new healthy lifestyle will mean you are more likely to return. Healthy living will feel like the norm. www.purefitnessuae.com
