Eat cake While a nutritionist might not recommend an emergency sugar intake during a moment of stress, eating a piece of your favourite cake or chocolate bar will release happy hormones. According to the Medical Wellness Association (among many other studies), serotonin, a mood-modulating neurotransmitter, is produced after the intake of chocolate. Serotonin is a happy hormone, just so you know.
Plug in In a 2012 paper for Journal of Consumer Research, ambient noise was found to boost creativity (loud music, however, was shown to do the opposite), while other studies have found a greater connection between listening to your favourite music and productivity levels.
Watch a cat video It’s well documented that being around animals can significantly reduce stress – and in 2011, research by Harvard Medical School proved that extends to the workplace. If you don’t have an office pet, watch a video of cute cats instead – there are more than two million of them on YouTube, totalling almost 30 billion views – which has also been shown to boost energy and happiness levels.
Rant about it Certainly don’t rant to your boss or colleagues, but you shouldn’t just talk to your mum or best friend, either. The American Psychological Association says that a professional psychologist will “recognise behaviour or thought patterns objectively, more so than those closest to you who may have stopped noticing – or maybe never noticed”. Maybe it’s time to let it all out to the pros.
Take ten Many a psychologist will tell you to think before you speak, especially if you find yourself clenching at an email you just received at work. A famous piece of philosophy from renowned Austrian psychiatrist, neurologist and Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl said, “Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” So before hitting “reply all”, take a break from your desk to consider the long-term consequences of a knee-jerk reaction.
