The Sharbatly Fruit Big Stinker returns to Ras Al Khaimah on Friday March 24

So what’s it all about? Not only does the Big Stinker (or Sharbatly Fruit Big Stinker brought to you by Urban-Ultra, to give it its full title) have arguably the best race moniker in the world, it also provides one of the toughest tests runners will face in the UAE. Athletes can choose between three distances – 12km, 24km or 45km. The latter will double as a qualifying race for the UTMB, one of the world’s most prestigious ultra-trail events held each year on Mont Blanc.
How high can you go? The rugged terrain outside Ras Al Khaimah will provide the backdrop as the 12km and 24km runners tackle an up-and-over course over a 540m mountain, while the ultra athletes will spend most of their time at an elevation of more than 1,500m.
What do the experts say? Louise Adamson of Urban-Ultra is no stranger to such arduous events and tells us: “12km first-timers can expect to push their bodies and minds to their limits on this 550m climb to the roof of Ras Al Khaimah. All runners will enjoy quiet gravel roads and goat tracks with spectacular views from the summit – and all the way down to the finish.” Dhs275. Fri Mar 24, 7am.
