It’s Global Wellness Day this week. Get involved with healthy activities
According to The World Health Organisation, “Wellness is a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”.
The issues of health and wellness are hot topics at the moment in the UAE, with diabetes and obesity a constant problem in the region. This has prompted an increased push on fitness and nutrition recently, with Dubai Municipality running campaigns on the subject in the past year.
Global Wellness Day falls annually on Saturday June 10, and in and around Dubai there are events to help you get active or become more aware of how you feel.
The initiative is, as its name suggests, a worldwide event aimed at promoting healthier living. The slogan “one day can change your whole life”, may sound on the corny side, but if it can alter your mindset, even in the smallest way, that has to be a positive thing.
The concept was established in Turkey in 2012 and has grown globally, with more than 90 countries taking in part in the celebrations and events in 2016. This year, it’s expected that more than 100 countries will be involved in some way.
Fairmont The Palm is getting behind the idea, hosting a 90-minute full moon yoga session and meditation on the beach from 8pm to 9.30pm. There will be a pop-up wellness market between 7pm and 10.30pm, showcasing a selection of health and fitness-related products, from yoga gear to protein shakes and healthy snacks.
