Al Barakah Restaurant: This small restaurant next to the petrol station serves Indian food. It’s good, but the main selling point is that it’s like an oasis in the desert – you’re unlikely to find another eatery for miles.

RTA HQ: You shouldn’t need to worry about vehicle licensing, parking permits, or, er, the repercussions of passenger smuggling, due to the fact that everyone’s giving up their cars now thanks to the metro. However, the RTA HQ is still a good place to know as they also deal with marine transport, taxis and, of course, the metro itself.

American College of Dubai: This is a good stop for students, with Cambridge International School, Gulf Indian School and Khalid Bin Whalid High School all nearby. The American College of Dubai is 10 minutes away and is especially for students who plan on transferring out of the UAE. It provides courses to prepare students for life at university, plus evening classes for associate degrees in the liberal arts, business and IT.

Dubai Institute for Human Resource Development: This government institution offers courses, unsurprisingly, in human resource services. Most courses are in Arabic, but they do have a handful in English. They also hold seminars from time to time – check online for corporate packages.

Festival City: This is an all-in-one (deep breath) shopping, dining, leisure, entertainment, homes, school, offices and hotels complex. The mall boasts more than 600 shops and over 100 restaurants. Definitely worth the bus ride. 04 232 5444
