The Dubai Mall: If there’s anything Dubai does best, it’s shopping malls – and the latest addition presents a strong case to justify its definitive moniker. With more than 1,200 shops and attractions, visitors can easily spend a whole day here, skipping between ice skating, munching from one of more than 150 food outlets and checking out the sharks in the aquarium.

The Dubai Fountain: Shooting out from the 30-acre Burj Dubai lake, The Dubai Fountain is an impressive sight, entertaining onlookers with more than 1,000 different water ‘expressions’. Once the Burj Dubai is open in December, you’ll be able to view all this from the observation deck of the tallest building in the world (although, from 442m up, the fountain will look positively piddly).

The Address Hotel: The Address is a sophisticated hotel with numerous restaurants and bars that boast unbeatable views of The Dubai Fountain and Burj Dubai. For some upper-class pampering, check yourself in at The Spa.

Souk Al Bahar: Downtown Burj Dubai’s answer to Souk Madinat Jumeirah is steadily gaining a reputation for its excellent restaurants, such as Mango Tree and Rivington Grill, and lively bars, particularly the new branch of Left Bank. The collection of shops remains quiet, but the souk does offer a more peaceful retail experience than its neighbour, The Dubai Mall.

The Palace, The Old Town: Situated right on the edge of the Burj Dubai lake, The Palace is a breathtaking, sprawling hotel, with canals lining the Arabian courtyards and majlis dotted around the pool where you can puff lazily on a shisha pipe. Visit one of the many sumptuous restaurants and bars here for a romantic evening.
