Ian Ashton, 55 Ductac’s operations director spills the beans on show business
Time Out Dubai staff
How did you begin your career? It started by accident back in 1977. I was asked to help out on a production of Othello, after which I was asked to tour with the show. I caught the bug and have been in the business ever since.
What does your job entail each day? I control the technical operations budget and meet clients from all over the world to discuss the logistics of staging their productions at Ductac.
How does Dubai’s theatre industry compare to that of other countries? Theatre in this part of the world is not looked upon as a real profession. [But] it’s a place where students can turn their imaginative thoughts into reality.
What’s the best bit about your work? Earlier in my career as a production manager, I loved being part of putting together a new show, from concept to realisation on stage, and listening to the audience’s reaction at the end. That still sends shivers down my spine.
