The addictive, growing trend of live escape games has finally reached Dubai. Locked in a room, participants need to solve a number of puzzles in a set amount of time to get out. There’s a definite rush that comes with making it out of the room in time, especially as you see the last few minutes count down. Add an extra competitive edge by booking two rooms at once and competing to see which team makes it out first.
Hint Hunt A great starting point for live escape game beginners. The briefing before the game is thorough with the chance to ask lots of questions. You’re reassured several times that no team has ever made it out without clues – it’s pretty much impossible without hints. We would recommend beginning with JM’s Office, which is a little more straightforward. The other room, the Zen Room, is more complicated and often requires the team to split and work on several different things at once. Both are totally different: one is themed on an early 20th century office and the other a traditional Japanese living room. From Dhs110 per person (varies depending on team size and peak times). Open Sat-Wed 10am-8.30pm, Thu-Fri 10am-10.30pm. Times Square Center, Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai, www.hinthunt.ae (04 321 2242).
Escape Quest There are two themes here: The Explorer’s Library and The Lab of Dr Zol, which is more physically interactive and complex. It’s definitely the more unique option and recommended for those who have already had a go at a live escape game. It differs from Hint Hunt in terms of clue-giving; it’s possible, but difficult, to escape without any clues. Therefore, hints aren’t given as often, but there’s the option to press a buzzer to request a clue. With this in mind, team success is measured by how many clues are given rather than how long it takes to escape. From Dhs120-Dhs140 per person (depending on number of players). Open daily 10am-11am. HDS Business Centre, Cluster M, Jumeirah Lakes Towers, www.escapequest.ae (055 284 5382).
There are four rooms with more planned. Developers aim to cover multiple genres including action, horror and crime. Dhs75-Dhs125 per person (depends on room and number of players). Open Sun-Wed 10am-10pm, Thu-Sat 10am-midnight. Sunset Mall, Umm Suqeim Road (050 256 0587). Other location: Al Wahda Mall, Abu Dhabi (02 445 2522).
