In the first of a new series, we look at what lies within walking distance of the stations. First up is Al Garhoud
Nargis Fatima Hasan
Garhoud is a place to go if you’re looking for good food, low-key bars or a quick dance. Of course, if you’re a flight attendant it’s also your home away from home. Located close to the Dubai International Airport, the area is supremely congested, but nonetheless a stop that can’t be ignored.
1 Fuddruckers: Fairly family-friendly, the relaxed atmosphere and spacious booths in Fuddruckers lends the joint a classic American diner feel. While the claim that it serves the world’s greatest hamburgers may not be quite true, it’s nonetheless a choice stop for a quick and reasonably priced bite. Be warned, though, their burgers are truly giant. 2 minutes walking distance from the station
2 India Palace: Reaching this little place from the station involves some slightly dangerous street crossing, but it’s worth the extra caution. True to its name, it really is fit for a king or queen. Not quite the quick bite stop the surrounding eateries have become, instead it’s better for a long, leisurely meal, especially the buffet. Live music and reasonable prices mean it’s worth dropping by at the palace (they do allow non-royalty in). 4 minutes walking distance from the station
3 Arabian Gallery: This quaint bookstore is the first in the region to specialise solely in Arabian-themed books. Fairly comprehensive, there are many options to buy or browse. 04 282 4060, Sun-Thu 8am-7pm; Sat 8am-1.30pm 3 minutes walking distance from the station
4 Charm Centre: In need of some rejuvenation? The Charm Centre offers massages and facials for ladies, and lots more for gents including manicures, pedicures and Moroccan baths. A top place to stop by for some unwinding after a long Dubai day.04 283 3640, Sat-Thu 10am-11pm; Fri 5pm-11pm 5 minutes walking distance from the station
5 Al Hallab: A slight walk up from India Palace, this Lebanese dining outlet is quite the favourite with the area’s locals. While the atmosphere and service are decent, it’s the food quality and cheap prices that are outstanding. 5 minutes walking distance from the station
6 Irish Village: Despite being further away from the station, the Irish Village is definitely worth the schlep. Its tranquil setting by a duck pond, nightly entertainment and Irish bar staff make it a unique and ever-popular haunt. The gift shop is a nice addition too, because really, who doesn’t want a giant green Guinness hat? 7 minutes walking distance from the station
7 Century Village: From Japanese to Portuguese eateries, this restaurant and bar complex seems to have it all. For sheer sophistication, stop by the Sapphire. If you’re looking for a trip to Persia, Sarband is right next door. In the mood for Lebanese? Al Majaz is the place to go. It’ll take you a century to get through them all. www.centuryvillage.ae, numbers and timings vary according to restaurant. 7 minutes walking distance from the station
8 The Dubliners: Located in Le Méridien, football screenings and a strong love for Celtic are the draws for this bar. A good stop for fans of finger food, and Dublin. 10 minutes walking distance from the station
9 Alpha: A club that has managed to impress even the most critical clubbers of Dubai, Alpha is worth the stroll for it’s variety of international acts, original events and relaxed upstairs room (for the more mature punter, who likes to hear themselves think and have a bit of a sit down). 10 minutes walking distance from the station
10 Warehouse: One of the chicest additions to Dubai’s nightlife scene, Warehouse is one ‘concept’ venue that surprised everyone by actually working. As well as a fancy wine bar, sushi bar and shisha terrace, there’s also a colourful boutique club. Head down for their terribly-named Friday ‘drunch’ for multi-flavoured mojitos and molecular gastronomy-themed food. 10 minutes walking distance from the station

I used to live in Garhoud before, there is much more to mention, like: Lifco supermarket, More cafe, Airport Millenium Hotel with all its restaurants, 24/7, pharmacy, laundry etc etc. Really good location for all your needs :))
