Dreamland Aqua Park
Make it a week of riding the slides as Dreamland Aqua Park in Umm Al Quwain offers discounted entry fees until August 19. Go once and get 50 per cent off your second visit, and then a third visit absolutely free. OK, it means you’ll spend half the week at a water park, but we don’t see a problem with that. Especially as there’s also a selection of dry attractions, including go karts and even a petting zoo. A perfect (and cheap) way to beat the summer heat. Next to Barracuda in Umm Al Quwain. Dhs100 for adults, Dhs70 for children from 4-11 years old. More information www.dreamlanduae.com
Take the time to learn more about UAE culture this Ramadan with free classes at the Eton Institute in Knowledge Village. The institute plans to run a course in learning the Arabic language, followed by cultural awareness sessions, throughout the course of the holy month. The final schedule is yet to be confirmed, but we hear the language course will run three times a week on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, followed by a 30-minute cultural awareness class. There will also be an iftar corner, a dedicated space for anyone breaking fast with Arabian delicacies. You’ll have to book quick, though, as spaces are limited and we’re guessing this will be popular. For more information and to confirm course dates and times, visit www.eton.ac or call 800 3866
The UAE’s first ever national playwriting competition, Act Up!, is looking for talented writers with a passion for theatre and something to say about life in Dubai. Entries can be a short scene with just two people, a five-minute monologue or even a one-act play of up to 15 minutes. The only rules are that writers use a maximum of four characters and that the piece refers to life in the UAE. The judges are particularly interested in scripts that look at the Arab side of life, as well as expat life. It’s a real chance for budding writers to see their work up on stage, as the winning script will headline an evening of performances in December to celebrate 25 years of Dubai Drama Group. But you’ll need to get scribbling fast, because the competition closes on August 28. Entries can be sent by email to firstname.lastname@example.org. Please mark your entry by writing ‘Act Up! ENTRY’ in the subject bar. For more information on Dubai Drama Group visit www.dubaidramagroup.com
