Ground broken on Dubai’s most ambitious project yet
It’s been known for some time that Dubai is going to be getting a megamall at some point, and work has finally got underway on Meydan One.
ICYMI, Meydan One is going to be massive. Properly massive. 40 million square foot massive. And His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, broke ground on the new site by laying its first stone at a high profile celebration last night attended by VIPs, partners and government officials.
The scope of the Meydan One project is unreal, and the following will back that up. Here’s what to expect from the project.
Love shopping? There’s going to be more than 600 retail stores, a dedicated 400m long “canyon” for high-end luxury brand; and a couple of “world’s largest” in the form of a 16,000 square metre retractable skylight, a 380-metre long dancing water fountain and a 1km long indoor skiing slope.
Among the retail premises will be two major department stores and an absolutely giant hypermarket; coupled with more than 100 food and beverage outlets, as well as another 20 outlets as part of the food court bolted on to the 21-screen cinema complex.
Prefer sports to shopping? There’s going to be a place for that too. Accompanying the indoor ski slope will be a 258,000 square foot indoor multipurpose sports facility. Expect regulation size sports fields and courts for football, basketball, squash, badminton, cricket, MMA, boxing, baseball batting cages and a golf driving range.
Prefer outdoor sports to indoor sports? There’s also going to be outdoor football pitches, trails for mountain biking, walking and running, as well as a skateboard and BMX park.
Prefer staying at home over playing sports? The 711m Dubai One residential tower is also going up, with the tower and surrounding area homing 83,000 residents. The residential district will be accompanied by dancing water features, a 4km canal, a berth marina, 5.3km biking and jogging trails, a 9km boardwalk and a 300m long beach.
The project has been referred to by the Dubai media team as, “a mega development. The Meydan One Mall will be like none before.”
They’re not lying, this is huge - especially given that it’s due to be completed inside three years. We’re already counting the days.
