‘Fakie’ is a group show that features 30 skateboards transformed by local scenesters. Expect works by Ubik, Lateefa Bint Maktoum, Wafa Hasher Al Maktoum and Hind Mezaina, among others (the artists represent nine nationalities).
So what’s with the show’s name? A ‘fakie’ is a skateboarding move where you ride the board backwards, but don’t think that organisers FN Designs are suggesting the scene in Dubai is retrograde: Vivek (or Ubik to his canvases) believes creative radars need to start investigating closer to home. ‘The culture is here and the people are here – we need to stop looking outside because it’s all here and it’s starting to show.’ All the boards, whether by the top-selling Lateefa Bint Maktoum or one of the lesser-known artists, will be on sale for Dhs2,000. Here’s to keeping it real. Fakie is at The Shelter, Al Quoz from May 13-27. For info, see www.fndesigns.blogspot.com.
