Where: The world’s most expensive dress in Raffles Dubai When: Thursday October 18
I was supremely excited by my invitation to the exclusive viewing of ‘the world’s most expensive black diamond dress’ by Debbie Wingham. After a mad scramble to decide what to wear to the viewing, blog-buddie Marcela and I were finally ready, and arrived only a tiny bit fashionably late. I immediately made a beeline for the beautiful Safiera Sait. She’d orchestrated the event, along with Gehan Sidky and her team.
It turns out there were two dresses on display – a faux version and the genuine article. Guests were asked to guess which one was the actual Dhs2.1billion diamond dress. We gamely tried our luck – after all, the prize was a stay in Raffles Seychelles…
Then I spotted acclaimed designer Debbie Wingham herself among racks of jewel-encrusted pieces. She was armed with her tape measure and trying to keep up with demand for her couture from the guests. I noted her dark hair, tailored black suit (hemline of feathers), high heels and alabaster skin: she looked like an elegant couture member of the Addams family. Debbie’s husband Damian also wore a black suit, bedazzled with a row of sparkling crystals along the collar. What an absolutely ink-able couple!
Later on, the Vietnamese artist and socialite Lan Stanley caught my eye, dressed in a yellow and grey dress with a neon yellow necklace. Lucky Lan later won the prize to the Seychelles. Marcella and I made do with chef Roland’s designer chocolate shoes… Sigh! It was time to head home.
