The Ninaz show was causing a stir in the fashion world: it was set to showcase an intriguing collaboration between Dubai socialite Nina Zandnia and renowned designer Essa Walla. I knew this would be a colourful occasion, both on and off the catwalk, so I gathered my stalwart event buddies (Marcela Danilova and Mandi Kingsbury) and headed for the Palm Jumeirah.
We weren’t disappointed. As soon as we arrived I knew I’d have rich pickings, artistically speaking. The atmosphere was thick with glamour. Beautiful fashionistas, designers and socialites milled around the outdoor enclosure looking effortlessly cool, helped by the heady, balmy twilight.
Almost immediately, I clocked my ‘ink’ for the evening: international model, stylist and Dubai sweetheart Mohammed Sultan. I’d been desperate to ink Mohammed for a while, so was over the moon to see him.
Soon it was showtime, and it was all super-bling and gorgeous. Setting the scene at the end of the runway was a huge tiara, created (I later learned) by designer Ali Bakhtiar. The models glided along the catwalk in a seemingly endless procession of full-length sparkling gowns. Finally, beautiful blonde bombshell Nina Zandnia – my second ink of the evening – walked down the catwalk to close the show, carrying a spectacular bouquet.
After the show I found Essa, who’s an old friend, and congratulated him. It was, after all, an extraordinary event, which had taken just a week to put together. Despite having worked 24 hours a day to pull it off, Essa was his gorgeous, vivacious self, and full of energy. I spotted Nina and darted over to introduce myself and congratulate her too.
Afterwards, I was exhausted – all that sparkle and glamour really takes it out of you. My buddies felt the same. It was time to go home and relax – until next week. For more of Hatty’s sketches and blog, see www.hattypedder.com.
