Socialite and illustrator shares her horse racing experiences
What: Jaguar Style Stakes at Dubai World Cup. Where: Meydan Racecourse. When: Saturday March 31.
Finally the Dubai World Cup had arrived, and I set out with my friend Marcela Danielova to Meydan. We found the location for the Jaguar Style Stakes, and dashed over to say a quick hello to the chic-looking judges. For me, the Jaguar competition – in which judges choose the best-dressed people on the day – is always the highlight of the Dubai World Cup, as fashion is such a major part of the racing world. As soon as I spotted radio presenter and blogger Simone Heng (one of the judges), I knew I wanted to ink her immediately. Singaporean-Australian Simone is deeply immersed in fashion, and she looked classic and elegant with a touch of ’40s glamour, rocking polka dots, pearls and red lips.
I then spotted my old friend Derek Jones, the director of Modena Model Management, who had provided the models for the event. Until recently, I hadn’t seen him for almost a decade, so it was great to catch up. I was particularly impressed by the best-dressed couple: Meredith and Mohd Pour. Their outfits were refined and elegant, and the chemistry between them was evident: they glowed with happiness, and I had definitely been rooting for them to win. Ilona Saleski was named the overall Jaguar Style Stakes best-dressed lady, winning the star prize of a Jaguar XK Coupe to drive for a year.
After all the excitement of the prizes being handed out, I looked around: the scene was a mind-blowing fashion feast. This was perfect inspiration for me – I couldn’t wait to ink this one. For Hatty’s blog and more of her art, see www.hattypedder.com.
