Time Out Dubai has a Askold Zapashny interview as part of a preview to the Moscow State Circus live in Dubai to perform UFO: Circus from another planet
Forget clowns in silly shoes and men putting their heads in lions’ mouths – The Great Moscow States Circus’ new show, UFO: Circus from another Planet, veers far, far away from the traditional.
Performing in Dubai from Wednesday February 10 to Saturday 13 at the Dubai World Trade Centre, the show will feature jugglers dressed as aliens speeding around on Segways, contortionists, aerial artists and the tallest sisters in the world, Ludmila and Tamara Titchenkovy (205cm and 208cm respectively). The show, created by brothers Edgard and Askold Zapashny, who come from a legendary circus dynasty in Russia, tells the story of a man who is captured by aliens and taken aboard their spaceship. “It’s interesting for an audience to think about aliens and how different people interpret them,” says director Askold Zapashny.
Costing more than €7 million to produce (almost Dhs28 million) the circus has been seen in Europe by more than 250,000 people, and features cutting-edge technology, unique sound and lighting effects and some of the very best artists from the circus world. “When I started the concept for this show I was looking for special people. I saw a guy with no legs and he was dancing on his arms on a talent show in Russia and that gave me inspiration to include him in this production, to make him a star.”
Throughout, the show aims to make audiences feel like they are inside the spaceship, through a unique combination of lighting and laser installations – not to mention a 14-metre flying saucer, too. Book tickets now – it’s sure to be out of this world. Dhs170-250. Feb 10-13. Times vary. Dubai World Trade Centre, Sheikh Zayed Road, www.platinumlist.net.
