1 The Woman in Black
You’ve probably heard plenty of stories about this creepy, atmospheric show, made even more famous by the 2012 film starring Daniel Radcliffe. But nothing can compare to seeing the chilling story play out live on stage. Don’t be put off by the fright factor – it’s a bit jumpy, yes, but it’s worth keeping your eyes uncovered to watch the absolutely sensational performances from just two actors who brilliantly pull off several different characters. Sep 26-Oct 2. Madinat Theatre, Souk Madinat Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim, www.madinattheatre.com (04 366 6546).
2 L.A. Dance Project
One of the first contemporary dance shows to hit the stage at Dubai Opera, L.A. Dance Project is a stunning production by the dance company of the same name. The show will feature pieces from the likes of Justin Peck (the astounding resident choreographer of the New York City Ballet) and music by the legendary composer Philip Glass. From Dhs150. Sep 28-29. Dubai Opera, Downtown Dubai, www.dubaiopera.com (04 440 8888).
3 Jersey Boys
This Tony Award-winning jukebox musical follows the story of ’60s rock ’n’ roll group Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons. As Tommy DeVito says, “if you’re from my neighbourhood, you got three ways out. You could join the army, you could get mobbed up. Or, you could become a star…” And that’s exactly what the Jersey boys do. The show charts their astronomical rise to fame, and is jam-packed with nostalgic hits such as Can’t Take My Eyes Off You, Walk Like a Man and Bye Bye Baby. This all-singing, all-dancing show is as jazzy and toe-tappin’ as they get. From Dhs250. Oct 11-14. Dubai Opera, Downtown Dubai, www.dubaiopera.com (04 440 8888).
4 Mandela Trilogy Brought to the UAE by Cape Town Opera, Mandela Trilogy creates a moving portait of one of the world’s most loved and influential leaders. It offers a tribute to the South African icon through choral Xhosa music, jazz and jive dancing from the music halls of ’50s townships, struggle songs of ’80s South Africa and the subsequent liberation music of the ’90s.
