Basement said it’s setting out to show emerging talent and, after a marathon of back-to-back, two week long shows in previous months, we’ve seen quite a mixed bag. There’s been some good talent in there at points, while a number have left us confused. We’ve been inclined to suggest that some of this emerging talent should be given a bit longer to, well, emerge. Leave ’em in there a bit longer.
But this new show appears to fair slightly better. Only a few years out of Tehran University, the selection of works by Ahoo Hamedi that Basement has assembled are an interesting selection. There’s no doubt that her talent is still some way to fruition, but the quizzical and emaciated figures that Hamedi presents do have a certain presence to them. Still, we agree with Basement’s statement on this young artist, in that the works ‘resemble preliminary sketches’, but whether ‘they are dynamic and mature’, as the pre-release suggested, is speculative. See what you reckon.
