The new show at Jamjar lets you watch artists create works of art right in front of you, and then take them home
Where has the immediacy gone in art? New design studio Fn (pronounced ‘fann’, it’s Arabic for ‘the arts’) seems to have pondered just this question when it cooked up this new monthly event at thejamjar. Here’s the premise: watch a seething mass of locally based creatives forge off-the-cuff art in front of your eyes, then take it home for a fairly minor price. From the pen, to the paper, to your living room at no more than Dhs500 a piece.
The inaugural event in May was a huge success, with 44 artists taking part. Registration continues right up until 5pm on the night, so if you’re a locally based artist and are looking to get noticed (and possibly sold) this is one big open invite to get out there. And, if you’ve had designs on buying into the local art market, this is could be very economic way to do it.
Fn was set up in April, adding to Dubai’s ever-emerging design scene. Under the direction of Sheikha Wafa Hasher Al Maktoum and Vivek Pramachandran (Cliché magazine), the event is their way of offering the city something spontaneous and with a more design-leaning angle. Affordable, immediate and (we’re told) darn social – not a bad way to spend a Thursday night.
