If you yearn for a time when Madonna was in her pomp and Dirty Dancing was the movie soundtrack of the moment, Dubai Marina’s latest nightspot might just be your new favourite club. Abandoning the house and urban DJs, bass-driven beats and making way for the Backstreet Boys and Belinda Carlisle, the atmosphere here is unashamedly cheesy.
You’ll encounter armies of middle-aged women popping and locking alongside twenty-somethings and glamorous girls. A reasonably intimate venue, if you’re the sort of clubber who likes to station yourself on an exclusive table and set yourself up for an evening of posing, Societe isn’t for you. If however, you like your clubs unpretentious, busy and unfailingly fun then you’ll find these qualities in abundance.
Curiously, the club’s been decked out to resemble 1950s domesticity, with faux bookcase wall paper and oversized lampshades that wouldn’t look out of place in your granny’s sitting room. Remarkably, it works, providing enough class to prevent the venue slipping into the ‘dive’ category but avoiding the clinical sense of elitism that plagues the majority of Dubai’s swanky nightspots.
At a few points in the evening Societe was compared to the enduringly popular Rock Bottom.
This is unfair as with eager staff on standby to assist you, to the extent of scampering up armed with lighters when cigarettes come out, Societe is actually quietly focussed on accommodating its guests, above and beyond what’s expected. If Societe is to be compared to Rock Bottom, it can only be for the egalitarian sense of unadulterated fun that permeates from both venues and for that reason it’s somewhat of an accolade for this new club.
At the time of writing, Societe was days away from a dose of 1990s nostalgia in the form of a live performance from Eurodance duo 2 Unlimited. You might sneer, but if you see yourself as above tapping your toe and reminiscing over bygone soundtracks, then you won’t like Societe. If, however, you’re a bit more down to earth, book a seat on the club’s crazy table (yes there is one) and get yourself to this refreshing addition to the Marina scene immediately.
