Inspired by renowned restaurateurs Dean and Geremy Lucas’ Spice Market bar and lounge in Melbourne, Australia, Asia Asia restaurant and lounge has perhaps been one of the most highly anticipated venues to open its doors in Dubai this year – and it doesn’t disappoint.
Its ideal location on the sixth floor of Pier 7 offers stunning views of Dubai Marina while its interior takes you on an exotic journey to a different place and time.
The lavish venue takes its inspiration from the ancient Spice Route travelled by traders of old and has been exquisitely furnished to reflect this famous journey from Asia Minor through to the Far East.
The venue has been elegantly decorated with enticing and unique artefacts, each with a unique history and story to tell. The lounges have been named and designed after exotic destinations such as Thailand, Shanghai, Macau and Kyoto, each one offering its own atmosphere and style.
From the moment you step out of the elevator and into the lobby of Asia Asia, you’re hit with the pleasant aroma of lemongrass, which may trick you momentarily into thinking you’re in a relaxing spa as opposed to a bar and restaurant.
The fresh scents are a welcome and refreshing change from the usual cloud of smoke that usually heralds the presence of the bar you’re about to walk into. On our visit, a polite, well-groomed hostess welcomed us warmly and escorted us through a candlelit corridor surrounded by Buddhas and Asian artefacts.
Walking into the main bar area is a bit like walking into a toy store for the first time as a kid – you are immediately overwhelmed by all the colourful and pretty sights. From the wooden bar stools, to the luxurious oversized booths to the hanging bird-style cages above you, Asia Asia’s decor is both enchanting and eye-catching.
Opting to sit outside on the terrace overlooking Dubai Marina, we were spoilt for choice with an array of mixed drinks and a well-rounded menu. However, after requesting two varities of grape, we were informed that they weren’t available, so we opted for a glass of fizzy grape instead at Dhs55 a pop.
The staff were both attentive and friendly as well as efficient. The atmosphere in the venue was relaxing and ideal for catching up with friends. Perhaps on a busier night it would have a livier vibe, but for now we are content with having a little piece of Asia to ourselves.
