“Say Lloyd, it seems I’m temporarily light. How’s my credit in this joint, anyway?” If you know the line you’ll love this place – all bottles and sophisticated, and thankfully not ghostly barmen. If you don’t know the line then (a) watch The Shining immediately and (b) you’ll probably still love this place. Set in the Four Seasons Resort Dubai at Jumeirah Beach, Hendricks is all deep red leather wall tiles, patterned carpet (shades of The Overlook again) and strange pictures of horses. Drinks are expertly executed, often by a man with a trolley. If that sounds naff, it isn’t – staff are smart and witty, and their free mixed nuts knock your average airline drinks accompaniment into a cocked, pretzel-shaped hat. There’s a definite older-guy atmosphere, but as the night progresses, the demographic diversifies, with couples popping by for pre-dinner drinks before heading down the stairs to Coya. That’s probably the best idea. It’s a decent starter to a night out, but not a main course in itself.
