Tucked away in Palm Jumeirah’s Palm Views East, around a corner and through two sets of double doors, this bar is unassuming (almost invisible) from the outside. But once those doors swing open, the ‘urban sports bistro’ is filled with chatter and the commentary from whatever football match is being screened.
We visited at what might have been a quiet time for many bars, but Barrel 12 was filled with families, friends and couples enjoying the sport, food and drinks. It’s one of the few standalone venues on the Palm and, as such, has a ready-made clientele in the island’s residents.
The décor is minimal and industrial – we’re talking filament bulbs, bare brick walls and an exposed ceiling, and it’s a casual place, somewhere to spend a few hours watching a game or two or whiling away an afternoon.
Staff are down-to-earth, chatty and happy to make recommendations, and there’s a good selection of hops on offer, a short-but-sweet grape list and a concise, well thought-out choice of mixed beverages. Prices are reasonable and there’s a regular happy hour and other deals, too. With a kitchen also turning out very good gastropub-quality food, there are plenty of reasons to make the trip up the trunk if you don’t already live there.
The bottom line This could become your new favourite place.
