First, The Eloquent Elephant is a great name for a pub. It also fits nicely with Taj Dubai’s Indian heritage. Secondly, the branding is amazing.
What about the venue itself? Well, it’s a modern British pub that serves a good selection of drinks and nice food. It is a fantastic addition to the pub scene in Dubai, in that it’s something totally different. Most are either old, tired and often in hotels you wouldn’t really want to go to with your other half, or pleasant enough, but look like they’ve been modelled on a pub in an English soap opera.
Thankfully The Eloquent Elephant is neither – it is the kind of modern place you will find in any English city. There are filament lightbulbs, craft hops, muted green walls and a posh bar snack menu. It is quiet when we first visit, but it is happy hour (4pm-7pm daily). There is a limited food and drink menu where everything is Dhs30 – the drinks are absolutely fine and a bowl of edamame beans is a nice accompaniment. A sign for Friday brunch promises a quirky selection of homemade fruity beverages and the craft hops menu is particularly impressive. Service is good throughout as well.
We return at a later date and find the bar getting busier. Staff remember us, too. Maybe elephants really don’t forget. Open Sun-Thu noon-2am Fri-Sat 11am-3am. Taj Dubai, Burj Khalifa Street, Business Bay (04 438 3100).
The bottom line Whether you go to a pub for food, drinks, sports or company, The Eloquent Elephant delivers.
