Any venue that provides an illustrated sliding scale of exactly how each drink will taste deserves praise for its attention to detail and inventiveness. But by the same token, any venue that feels the need to spin a yarn in the menu about being “envisioned as a dream one moonlit night”, needs a stern word about trying too hard. And that’s really where Noir just falls short of being top notch; it’s almost like the place doesn’t totally believe in itself and has turned it up to 11 when ten would, of course, have been just perfect. There is no doubt it looks terrific – dark, stylish and decked out in trendy leather furniture, fur pouffes and striking table tops. But why is there a space housing minimal seating and a collection of ornate decanters and tumblers “hidden” behind a velvet rope? Same goes for the snacks; who really wants a “trio of quinoa”? That said, at about Dhs50, most options are well priced, and the cerviche is excellent. The drinks menu is as extensive as it is impressive. True to form, though, one option costs Dhs475 (the average price is a pleasing Dhs80). Ironic that these flourishes cheapen what is otherwise a welcome addition to the Dubai bar scene.
