Among Dubai’s stacks and stacks of identikit hotel bars, Vii arrives looking like something Lewis Carroll would have put to paper. Sure, there’s a distinct lack of hurried white rabbits, chain-smoking caterpillars and invisible cats (or are there…?), but everything else about this vibrant Sheikh Zayed Road nightspot feels plucked from the pages of Alice in Wonderland. Located on the seventh floor of the Conrad Dubai, a plush indoor lounge leads out to the venue’s impressive “secret garden”. Inside, high ceilings and low lighting lend a clubby vibe, accented by the sofas lining the walls and the few tables scattered between. With heavy, ornate mirrors mounted around the room, the space is minimalist, but distinctly upmarket. Despite the retro-royal furnishings, the bar feels deeply modern thanks to the clever juxtaposition of simple wooden panelling, vibrant lighting and a contemporary bareness throughout. A large DJ booth, where the resident decksmith plays deep tech and soulful house, sits next to the bar, where staff are eager to show off their mixology skills. As you might expect, this isn’t a budget option, with some of the mixed beverages coming in at an eye-wateringly high price. Nevertheless, with its welcoming, lively atmosphere and fairy tale features, this trendy joint is a chic addition to Sheikh Zayed Road. You’d be mad as a hatter not to try it.
