Nestled on the third floor of DUKES Dubai is The Cigar and Whisky Lounge. Like many other bars in the city at the moment, it’s on the quiet side when we visit. This could be due to the season, the bar’s newbie status or the fact that unless you knew it was there, you wouldn’t necessarily find it. However, when you do happen upon this sleek hideaway, it’s a decent and comfortable place to have a drink, provided, of course, you’re not averse to smoke.
The bar has a typical old-school, masculine feel about it – all dark leather furnishings, squishy armchairs and dark wooden panelling.
It’s moodily lit, in stark contrast to the bright, colourful Tea Lounge that’s visible through the interior windows, full of neon pinks and greens and as bright as the Cigar Lounge is dark.
The room is a square, squat space and has a smoky, classic vibe to it, with a row of stools to pull up to the bar itself.
As the sister hotel of DUKES in Mayfair, the Palm Jumeirah location has all the upmarket trappings of the original, just on a larger scale, which – for the majority of the hotel – dampens any intimate vibe. However, this bar maintains its cosy atmosphere, due to the enclosed space.
DUKES’ Bar, downstairs, is the more famous of the hotel’s watering holes, modelled on the London version, serving up DUKES’ signature mixed drinks (think James Bond).
But this lesser-known spot is worth a visit if you like your bars to come with gentlemanly charm and you don’t mind the lack of patrons.
If you’re looking for a manly lounge vibe, you’ll find it here.
The bottom line A bar with a comfortable (smoky) air.
