Don’t make judgement on Secret Terrace until you’re happily ensconced in a comfy swinging chair, sipping on a cool drink.
On arrival at the Steigenberger Hotel Business Bay’s newest bar you’ll head down a staircase surrounded by pretty faux foliage. It’s not that easy to find (that’s the secret bit, right there) so if you’re a first time visitor don’t mistake it for Swim & Tonic, the upstairs pool bar.
Once you’ve descended the narrow staircase you’ll step out onto the terrace, and be faced with, well, a view of a building site. It’s not pretty, but not unusual in Dubai. And that’s why we say reserve opinions until you’re comfortably seated, as the wall cleverly hides the construction, leaving you with a prime view of Burj Khalifa.
The space is long and narrow, with pretty, sparkly fairy lights lending a garden party feel. Sofas are dotted around and, if you can bag one, don’t pass up the chance to sink into one of those aforementioned hanging chairs. You’ll twirl around carelessly, swinging gently as if on a front porch in an American movie. It’s chilled, relaxed and oh-so-comfortable.
Drinks all come in around the Dhs50-70 mark, and boast hops, grape and some interesting mixed drinks (jalapeño beverage, anyone?). For better value, ladies, visit on Wednesday where for Dhs100 women get unlimited drinks from 7pm until midnight, plus a plethora of bar snacks (think nachos, Thai fish cakes, wings, calamari et al). It’s not gourmet, but it’s good enough.
As you exit try not to peer into the hotel gym (it’ll only make you regret those nachos). A chilled vibe and decent views means Secret Terrace is worth a visit, especially on a ladies’ night.
The bottom line Visit for pre-dinner drinks with skyline views.
