We love the idea of a speakeasy bar. There’s something romantic about finding a special place, hidden away. Usually the venues are cosy, dimly lit and super stylish. That’s certainly the case with Poppy, the mixed drinks bar from US chef David Myers.
Poppy is the third venue from Myers at Renaissance Downtown in Business Bay (the others are French restaurant Bleu Blanc and Italian BASTA!). This one, however, is a little harder to find. We wouldn’t dream of spoiling the fun by telling you exactly how to find it, but staff in the lobby will point you in the right direction.
Beyond the door is exactly what we’d hoped. A dark, mostly candlelit venue. It’s gorgeous, and we feel like we’ve stumbled upon our own private bar.
Also adding to that is the fact there are more staff than customers, but we guess that’s what happens when you don’t promote your venue. The vibe is still good, which is helped by the music, which they proudly say is “vinyl only”. Vinyl isn’t playing when we arrive, slightly spoiling that claim, but the tunes are still great (think blues, ’60s) and the DJ arrives later in the evening.
If you’ve hung around waiting for him, the chances are you’ve racked up a sizeable bill, as the mixed drinks (lovely as they are) average at around Dhs75. Worth it? Almost. The bottom line One for a (very) classy nightcap.
