It might have shortened its name from ‘Waxy O’Conner’s’ to the slightly more catchy ‘Waxy’s’, but for the most part this boozer remains exactly the same as it ever was, right down to the well-worn chairs and scuffed wallpaper. But as they say, if it ain’t broke…
You’d be hard-pushed to call Waxy’s the most salubrious place in Dubai. But just like a plate of cheap, greasy food, few expats in Dubai can resist its dirty charms, at least every now and again. Indeed, the reason for the sun-starved pint pit’s success is simple: the proprietors have lined up a deluge of deals to entice budget-conscious pub-goers.
Indeed, the ‘Waxy’s weekend’ has become a stock phrase for Dubai’s expats, although weekday nights are often sparsely-populated and therefore a bit depressing. This is a place that thrives on big crowds.
The weekends’ popularity is largely down to Friday and Saturday’s brunches, during which Dhs85 gets you a full Irish breakfast, five drinks and a second buffet later on. It’s hardly gourmet cuisine, of course, but you go to Waxy’s for the craic, not the snacks, and, provided the company is good, this is a perfectly fine place to spend a weekend with friends or colleagues.
