Located on the fifth floor bar of the new Pullman hotel, adjacent to Mall of the Emirates, Vantage is a welcome addition to the Al Barsha watering-hole collective. While the interior decor, focusing on lavender and brown hues, is startlingly similar to either a grannies’ tea room or a first-class airline lounge (we can’t decide which), the outdoor terrace is too alluring to waste much time with this air-conditioned head-scratching.

Generously-sized couches with springy cushions litter the outdoor (and smoking) area, which has views of the distant Burj Khalifa – its kitsch light display gives the impression of a gigantic Christmas tree. Once you’ve manage to coax your eyes back into your head, there are three menus to peruse, featuring grape, snacks and drinks (the latter boasts even more snacks). There’s an extensive selection of grape available, starting at Dhs40 for a glass – there’s even a guide to grape tasting – but yeast lovers are also well catered for, with a very international selection of draught and bottled options.

As for snacks, the healthy among you need not fear: this is not a haven of deep-fried cheese sticks and chicken wings. Instead, for about the same price, how about a fillet of grilled salmon or an order of scallops? We’d wager this is also the only bar in the city where you can order trifle with your pinot, and with that, we’re sold.
