It’s extremely rare that we’re so pleasantly surprised when we visit a bar for the first time. But Level 43 had us at ‘whoosh!’ (that was the rush of wind when we opened the door). Perched on top of the Four Points by Sheraton on Sheikh Zayed Road, you’ve barely got to set foot outside onto the patio of this open-air pool bar before you’re mesmerised by the view.

Admittedly, there’s no real reason for visiting this bar aside from the view – if the panorama all the way down the coast and the lovely staff make it special, the generic, bland bar snacks (olives, risotto balls et al) and absence of any real decor make it distinctly average. Thankfully, your eyes are so distracted from your immediate surroundings that these oversights all but pale into invisibility. And though we’d thought this was a hidden gem – we mentioned it to friends before we visited; no one had even heard of it – there was certainly no shortage of customers on our visit.

If the managers are eager to cash in on this nifty little drinking spot – and they clearly are, with a bottle of hops costing Dhs30 and soft drinks at Dhs14 – they’d do well to throw a few dirhams at the furnishings. Even if it’s just for a few potted plants.
