New Jumeirah-run hotel Zabeel Saray, located on the Palm Jumeirah, will never win any awards for subtlety. Gigantic chandeliers hang in every lobby, multi-coloured fountains trickle here and there and the flower bouquets are like small gardens unto themselves. Inside the strongly Ottoman-themed venue are 10 international eateries and two bars, including Voda Bar. Surprisingly slick in its setting, the lounge’s decor is white and minimalist, with ’60s-style cave chairs and super-high ceilings.

When we visited one Friday night it was already fairly full, which was also pleasantly surprising considering its newness (it opened on January 4) and location on the very furthest end of the man-made islands (bar the One & Only The Palm, that is). The crowd is a mixture of stylish and bling, made up mainly of couples, while the hip, bespectacled DJ leisurely spins Daft Punk and Prince from his fittingly white Mac. As for drinks, the menu boasts various spirits and grapes, reworked and original mixes and dozens of brands of clear Russian drink, while sushi dishes start from Dhs30. Worth a visit to impress a date, especially if you live on the Palm.
