Once a fine-dining restaurant, West Beach Bistro is now a sports bar with a giant concave screen stretching from floor to ceiling, and other smaller screens dotted around the bar. When we visited they were showing football on the big curved screen: though atmospheric and definitely a focal point, we were a little put off by its shape, which was quite nauseating to watch (although we’re sure you get used to it).
The decor brings to mind a smart American diner – guests can sit at open booths or tall tables and admire the pictures of sports stars adorning the walls. Food-wise, there’s plenty to like: the tongue-in-cheek bar menu offers ‘first half’ (starters), ‘second half’ (mains) and ‘final whistle’ (dessert), and we tucked into some satisfying pub grub, including beer-battered fish and an American-style strawberry cheesecake. This is an easy, unpretentious spot to unwind and a great place for a reasonably priced drink during the mid-week happy hour, which offers half-price selected drinks from 6pm to 9pm.
