Falling somewhere between an old-fashioned British boozer and a Mediterranean taverna, the Dhow & Anchor is a lively place where residents and tourists alike throw back drinks and talk nonsense at an increasing volume. However, beyond the fog of cigarette smoke is a snug dining room and a lovely open terrace where decent pub fare can be sampled reasonably cheaply. The steak and mushroom pie, with its combination of superb flaky pastry, tender hunks of beef and chunks of mushroom swimming in thick ale gravy, is a favourite with regulars, and the chips aren’t weedy French fries but sturdy numbers that soak up the rich sauce to perfection.
