In no way affiliated to the popular UK chain, Waxy's is a hugely popular Irish pub. The reason for the sun-starved pint pit's success is simple: the proprietors have lined up a deluge of deals to entice in the budget-conscious boozer. The biggest bargain is the Friday funky brunch, at which Dhs50 will get you a full Irish breakfast, five drinks and a second buffet further down the line.

For years this legendary watering hole was regarded with a mild grimace by the city’s gastronomes; a greasy spoon kind of joint serving up functional beer-soaking comestibles, but things have taken a turn towards the gastropubby. Try the excellent Yorkshire pudding, which contains a lake of rich steaming beef casserole.
