The salon Infinity Spa and Health Club is located, quite bizarrely, on the rooftop of a refurbished car park that will soon be joined (via a concourse) to the new Millennium Plaza on Sheikh Zayed Road. The somewhat arduous trek though the hotel lobby and then across the street to get to the tower (amid tatty building scraps) is not a first impression you want to last. Even so, the facility itself is nice enough, without being overdone – the feel is more that of a luxury gym, because it offers gym and pool membership as well as spa services.
The promise The 30-minute Mango Delight body scrub aims to slough away dead skin, while the aromatherapy massage promises to relax and encourage circulation.
Step by step The first thing I notice on arrival at this spa is there are no welcome drinks or refreshing towels, nor do they provide disposable undergarments (so you can stick to underwear or go without – it’s up to you). My lovely therapist, Putri, begins by telling me that the mango body scrub is made of organic mango and passion fruit extracts, carrot seed oil and anti-ageing vitamins. Beginning with my feet, she applies the juicy-smelling scrub to my legs, using firm, fast motions to scrub away dead skin.
I feel as if all the stresses from the day are being softly sloughed away – the scrub is refreshing and applied with expert touch. After showering, I return to dimmed lights as Putri begins the aromatherapy massage, using lavender oil. This time she uses light pressure – her soft strokes could do with some more oomph, but I decide to enjoy the massage as is.
The result Afterwards, I’m completely relaxed and my skin feels and looks baby-soft. The spa itself may not be too different to look at, but the treatments are top notch and the therapists are obviously well trained.
Pros • The staff are friendly and attentive, without being overbearing. You won’t find them lingering outside the changing rooms. • The piano lounge-style music playing in the treatment room is a cross between A Clockwork Orange and Mozart, but in a good way. The most tasteful music we’ve heard in a treatment room by a long shot.
Cons • The prices are quite steep. The Millennium Plaza bills itself as a five-star hotel, but we’re not sure the spa’s location lives up to that. • The changing rooms are plain, sterile and locker-room style, catering more to gym junkies than spa seekers.
