The promise Naya Yoga & Pilates is a relatively new addition to the Motor City community. It offers reformer Pilates (pictured below), fun classes such as ‘Latino cardio’ and barre, plus a number of yoga styles, including hatha, vinyasa, yin and iyengar. Hatha flow at Naya is described as a combination of conscious breathing and mindful poses aimed at aiding relaxation while developing strength and flexibility.
Step by step While waiting for the class to begin, we sit on a cosy sofa in the reception area and sip on the complimentary hot tea that is set out for guests to help themselves to. The class is composed of an opening meditation followed by some slow and simple warm-up rotations. The pace and mood of the class is relaxed, but focused, allowing you to move at a pace that you are comfortable with. Many of the sequences are derived from the sun salutation, moving onto lengthy sequences built around the warrior and pigeon poses. The movement built into each sequence makes us feel we’re getting a really thorough stretch. The class includes a lot of repetitive movement of the arms with rhythmic breathing. The session ends with a lovely savasana experience, with scented oils and chanting set to relaxing music.
The result We leave feeling exhausted, calm and ready for a good sleep.
Pros • The experience is challenging yet calm. This means, it’s relaxing, but we still feel like our body has had an all-round stretch. • We particularly like the use of candles, music and scented oils in this class.
Cons • Motor City is far from our own neighbourhood, however, Naya seems like a friendly community to be a part of if you are close by.
