The promise The treatment should remove any stains from teeth as well as any other plaque build-up. The end result should be a fresher, cleaner mouth with a whiter smile.
Step by step Trips to the dentist usually result in lying back and having to open your mouth wide, often awkwardly and causing some discomfort. Here that wasn’t a problem at all – we were introduced to a mechanism we’ve not seen before. It fits in your mouth and keeps it open, meaning less strain on the jaw. Catching our reflection in the mirror had us in giggles though – we looked like Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. Once it’s in place the dentist uses an ultrasound sonic scaler to scale our teeth and around our gums. The process removes any bacteria and blood that may be present and aids any symptoms of gingivitis and gum inflammation. Next, our teeth are scrubbed with a gel – almost like an exfoliator – to remove any stains. Our teeth are also given a thorough once-over to see if we need any fillings or if there is any decay.
We’re shown the results on a screen, which highlights any problem areas. It has taken about 40 minutes to get to this point, so you can’t say it isn’t a thorough treatment. The standard treatment is complete, but we opt for a glow whitening treatment too. A fluid is placed on our teeth and left for between five to ten minutes to do its magic. Once done, we give our teeth a quick rinse and are free to ask any questions.
The result A success. Our smile is brighter and our teeth a shade whiter. They are also noticeably more smooth and feel cleaner.
Pros • Dr Hanane Papoyans is very friendly and carefully explains all the procedures and options prior to the treatment. • Forget all preconceived ideas about a trip to the dentist, this is as stress-free as it gets. As soon as we arrive, we are offered herbal teas, fancy coffees and magazines.
Cons • For the rest of the day, our teeth feel a bit sensitive, but it’s manageable with a mild painkiller.
