The thing about spinning classes is that it’s easy to hide, to rein it in a little, to short-change yourself. But there’s no such luck, if indeed that is the word, at Surge, the brand-new studio in Dubai Media City.
Surge is Spinning 2.0, using latest-technology bikes to not just work your legs, but also to give your core a true once over, whether you want to or not. The bikes move on a water-based axis (making it far closer to the true feeling of cycling outdoors), so while the instructor’s demand to “crank it up through the gears” could still be ignored, when told to twist left or right, any cheating will be highlighted to the whole class.
And what’s more, the very nature of sitting on an “unstable” mount means the core is engaged passively throughout. The key factor is stability. With the bike not locked to the floor in the way that traditional spinners are, the rider must prevent it from wobbling wildly as the cadence ramps up. Easier said than done.
The 45-minute class is a calorie-burning combination of interval hill climbs and sprints set to a thumping bass soundtrack. The dark room is illuminated by disco-style lights, all controlled by a handful of different instructors – an Ironman athlete, a weightlifter and Les Mills-trained professional among them – depending on the day.
As for the rest, Surge has done well with the limited space at its disposal on the 11th floor of Concord Tower. Vividly decorated and classically styled changing rooms are spacious and fit two showers per gender, as well as ample sink space and a bathroom trolley. Set in the heart of Media City, its convenient session times (7.30am and from 6pm onwards) make for a hugely attractive pre- and post-work class proposition.Get spinning.
