If you’re going to slob about in your pyjamas, why not do it in someone else’s? And by someone else’s, we mean B/Attitude Spa’s. And by slobbing about, we mean lying flat on your face while a skilled therapist manhandles your limbs into positions you never dreamt you’d be in. It’s called a Thai massage, and there’s a reason it has been around for more than 2,500 years.
Developed by an ayurvedic doctor named Jivaka Kumar Bhacca, Thai massage incorporates principles from Ayurveda, the ancient Indian medical practice, as well as assisted yoga postures and acupressure. Unlike the vast majority of soothing spa sessions which involve marinating in expensive oils and balms, traditional Thai massage is performed dry, with the subject wearing a loose, comfortable outfit. Most also take place on a mattress on the floor, rather than a raised treatment bed, allowing your therapist to climb on and twist you into a pretzel without any risk of wobbling off and plummeting to the floor.
This is exactly the kind of experience on offer at B/Attitude in Dubai Marina’s Grosvenor House Tower 2. The spa itself is low-lit and busy with elaborate Asian trinkets and cabinets filled with retail products worth more than the clothes you’re standing in. Throughout, it all feels very cosy. Coincidentally, so do the large, baggy “pyjamas” we’re offered on our visit – if a little difficult to actually keep from falling down. Thankfully, we’re soon stretched out on our treatment room’s mattress, where our Thai therapist begins very firmly kneading our muscles.
Anyone who finds themselves regularly booking or needing a sports massage would do well to give authentic Thai massage a try. This is a real deep-tissue affair, and as we’re lifted upwards, twisted sideways and pushed forward, every tightness and tension in our muscles fizzles away.
