Step by step
I arrive at the spa a little late, feeling stressed from work, the traffic and the school run; apparently I’m a perfect candidate. I’m led directly to the treatment room, which is beautifully laid out with its own bathroom, wardrobe and heated treatment bed. Once my therapist is happy that I won’t have any adverse reactions to the products (an organic range by Aromatherapy Associates), I get on the table and relax under the warm towels. The first part of the treatment is the full-body exfoliation, using a formula made with essential oils and ground olive stones. It feels quite rough, and at times just a little too scratchy, but I feel as though it’s actually taking off the dead skin. After a wonderful power shower, it’s time for the full-body massage, which uses medium pressure, although you can request more of a deep-tissue treatment if that’s what you prefer. Soothing body butter and body oil comprising macadamia nut oil, vanilla, ylang ylang and coconut oil is generously applied. By this time I’m in relaxation heaven and very cosy on the warmed bed. My therapist only talks when asking me to move something and there is none of that irritating ‘whale music’ in the background that’s played in so many spas – just blissful, relaxing silence and scents from the essential oils. After the massage, I’m tucked up warmly in the body wrap, and hot stones are placed in key places to ‘open channels and release tension’ as my mini facial begins. It’s over far too soon, which, in my opinion, means it’s a great treatment. I usually start to get bored and fidgety after an hour, but the 90 minutes whizz by.
• It’s super-relaxing. • The therapists are very experienced and professional. • Use of all the Raffles spa facilities is included with the treatment, so it’s worth arriving early, or staying on afterwards.
• None – unless you like new-age spa music. It’s not even too expensive when you consider you can spend the whole day there and make use of the spa’s pool, steam rooms and relaxation areas.
Excellent. My skin felt mega-soft afterwards, and the essential oils smelt divine. My husband even commented on it later that evening, which confirms a result.
