Time Out tests its 'down dog' at this popular yoga class
Time Out Dubai Staff
This yoga studio, housed in an apartment, has a hippie vibe and focuses on teaching old-fashioned yoga to eager students who sing their praises. Their hatha and traditional ashtanga yoga classes are popular, but for a more intense experience, try a session of power yoga. The class starts with everyone chanting ‘Om’ in a narrow studio that’s surrounded by mirrors, before going through rounds of sun salutations, warrior and power poses. Harnam, the instructor, has been teaching power yoga for more than eight years and is quick to correct students with a hands-on approach, making sure everyone tries their best to get into the right stance and always encouraging you to push harder, faster, stronger. It can get very intense, so it’s not for the absolute yoga beginner but should one wander through, they’ll no doubt be made to feel very welcome. You’ll leave wet with sweat, a little out of breath, and a smile on your face from the satisfaction of knowing you had a real workout. Dhs65 per class, Dhs1,200 a month for unlimited power yoga focusing on weight loss. Daily 4pm–10pm. Gems of Yoga, White Crown building (KFC building), Sheikh Zayed Road, before Crowne Plaza Dubai. www.gemsofyogadubai.com (04 331 5161).
