This new venue in Galeries Lafayette is La Coupe’s second Dubai salon (the original, at The Address Dubai Marina, opened three years ago). This outlet is more low-key than the first: we like the clean white lines, circular design and reclining, massaging chairs at the basins. Owner Jacques learned his trade at La Coupe in Paris, and now has seven branches, in Lebanon, Qatar, Egypt and Dubai. Hair experts take note: the salon also sells top-quality Redken products from NYC, which can be tricky to find in Dubai.
Step by step
On arrival, Jacques has a quick chat with me about the condition of my hair and what exactly I want done: I ask for a general tidy-up and trim of my long locks, and a slightly darker, warmer colour. Jacques is super-friendly, helpful and knowledgeable, giving professional advice and suggestions: he recommends having the colour applied in layers, rather than a block shade, allowing my natural colour to mingle with the new shade and making regrowth less noticeable. Once the colour is mixed, he applies it using foils, then leaves me to flick through a pile of magazines (all bang up to date: top marks!).
Next it’s over to the sink, where one of his staff rinses out the colour, then she shampoos my hair as I recline in one of the massaging chairs (the most comfortable I’ve experienced in a salon). After noting that my hair is dry and brittle, she offers to use a deep conditioning treatment, which she applies using blissful head massage techniques. Then it’s back to the chair, where Jacques snips expertly at my split ends, then asks me to stand so he can get my fringe super-straight. After a blow-dry from one of Jacques’ colleagues, during which he explains how I can recreate the slightly wavy, beachy look at home, I’m left to inspect my new cut.
The rich brown shade is darker than I’d originally envisaged, yet it brings out the colour of my eyes, and I’m soon smitten with my new look. Jacques has followed my requests to a T, keeping the length on my hair but tidying up my fringe (which is now, after months of neglect, finally poker-straight!).The conditioning treatment has also left my hair super-soft and shiny.
• The location at The Dubai Mall is convenient, with plenty of parking, and no need to venture outside and risk flyaway hair in the humidity. • Staff are friendly, but equally happy to leave clients alone to relax with a magazine. • Jacques is a genuinely nice guy and knows his stuff: his expertise means he can tailor clients’ requests to best suit their hair type.
• The price is towards the high end of the scale, although not excessively so (we guess it’s worth paying extra for the expertise).
