The practiceSmall, yet rich with that familiar smell of dental fluids, the North Carolina Dental Practice is quiet when I visit, but that could be because it’s Wednesday afternoon and the place is only open 9am-5pm during the week. The waiting room could well be bustling with quivering patients on weekends.
The promiseThe smile consultation is part of the clinic’s new smile makeover service, which claims to give patients the chance to design their perfect smile. Your teeth, gums and smile are analysed before your options are presented to you, with the intention of recommending the most effective way to make over your smile to your individual budget.
Step by stepAs with any medical practice, the first step is to fill out the form declaring any health conditions I may have, before being ushered into the dentist’s chair. Here, Dr Huda Jawad asks me if I’m aware of any issues with my teeth, and if there’s anything in particular I am unhappy with (I tell her my front teeth dip in slightly), before proceeding to check each of my teeth on my upper and lower jaw. Apart from some wear and tear (thanks to a life-long diet cola habit) and a small chip at the front (thanks to a clumsy high school friend), Dr Huda tells me my teeth are in very good condition, and I’m looking after them well. Taking out a cosmetic assessment sheet, she asks me to choose my favourite from three pictures of different smiles, before checking my smile line (how many of my teeth I reveal when smiling) gingival aesthetics (how much gum can be seen), symmetry (whether the top and bottom teeth match), facial midline (whether my teeth are in line with the middle of my face) and the colour of my teeth.
The resultsImpressively, there isn’t an emphasis on up-selling. Dr Huda says that though a top brace is an option if I am concerned about my front teeth dipping inwards, she doesn’t think it’s necessary to opt for veneers or whitening, as my teeth are already straight and white. She suggests a clean, and an orthodontist appointment if I want.
Pros• It’s free.
• Dr Huda is knowledgeable and doesn’t try to push expensive treatments if they’re not needed.
Cons• The weekday opening hours aren’t convenient if you work 9am-6pm, like most of Dubai’s population.
