The promise Despite the incongruous ‘K’, Kalm is aptly named: the surroundings are just that. In the nail salon area, there are a handful of reclining chairs, plenty of cushions and soft music. The Kalm luxury mani-pedi features the usual cleaning and polishing, with an added exfoliation to buff away dead skin.
Step by step I choose my polish and am ushered into my chair by the two lovely therapists who will be doing my hands and feet. They settle me in with a cup of green tea before getting to work, meticulously removing polish, filing my short nails and cutting away cuticles. I’ve opted for an extra neck and shoulder massage, which makes the experience even more relaxing. At one point, I do feel a little self-conscious about being overly pampered, but the comfortable surroundings make it easy to relax into the experience.
The results The night after the massage, I sleep like a baby. As for my nails, I chose a subtle terracotta hue that I thought would make chips less noticeable, but I needn’t have worried. The polish is robust and barely chips at all in the first few days.
Pros • Staff are engaging and helpful. • Staff and customers speak to each other by their first names, which gives a lovely, personal feel. • There are only six chairs in the room, so you won’t feel like you’re on the mani-pedi conveyor belt.
Cons • Making plans afterwards is a no-no. You will be so relaxed, all you’ll want to do is sleep.
