Hollywood drama queens, tabloid conspiracy theories and a vigorous head massage leave us smiling at Harvey Nichols
Four Step Hair & Scalp Facial Treatment Kit, by Philip B. Available at Harvey Nichols (04 409 8888) Mall of the Emirates, Dhs480.
‘What is it now?!’ the voice inside of the suite on the 41st floor of the Shangri La hotel bellows. ‘That’s no way to greet your public,’ we respond as the door flies open to reveal the hairdressing powerhouse that is Philip B – lock-tamer to the stars and all-round hair-product maven.
We try to feign offence, but it’s not possible. Within moments Philip is regaling us with tales of Hollywood drama queens (the old ones are the best in his book – they have more class) and his theories on Princess Di’s death (she was done in, sayeth Phil with an arch smile) and suddenly it’s like we’re new best friends. Time Out would be flattered but we suspect he’s like this with all the girls.
Still, Phil’s easy charm means that we’re even willing to overlook the name of the goods we’re here to test-try – the at-home Four Step Hair & Scalp Facial Treatment (spot the erroneous word). Yeah, we get it, it’s meant to be like a facial for the scalp – nourishing, reviving and all that jazz. But a facial it is not, nor ever can be.
Forty-five minutes later, however, and all such semantic misnomers are forgiven – we have see the future of in-home hair treatment and it’s branded Philip B. All Phil’s products use only the finest botanical extracts (they truly do smell good enough to eat) and the proof of the pudding is in the, er, shine (no, we don’t think that one quite worked either). We had to see it ourselves to believe it, but this hair transformation was more dramatic than Cher’s wig collection – shiny, bo=uncy, tresses in just four short moves. We stepped out of that hotel suite like we’d just stepped out of a salon.
