How to get your beauty fixes delivered to your door in Dubai
Time Out Dubai staff
A new you, delivered right to your doorstep…
When life gets hectic, visits to the beauty salon are often one of the first things to fall by the wayside. With long to-do lists at work, errands to run and children to look after it’s no wonder that a spa session doesn’t take priority on most people’s lists. By the time you reserve an appointment, brave the traffic, find parking and have whichever treatment you’ve booked, a good portion of the day has already gone. That’s where home beauty visits come into their own, and with mobile beauty, health and wellness services popping up all over the city, getting perfectly pampered in your own home has never been easier. We take a look at some of the companies ready to deliver a brand new you to your front doorstep.
Beauty GlamBox Starting from Dhs71 a month, GlamBox will deliver a box of beautifully packaged miniature beauty goodies to your home or office every month.
The set-up: After subscribing online, simply sit back and wait for your box to be delivered. Our box was full of Benefit products and arrived in a flurry of pink and black ribbon and paper. Inside were five beauty treats including a mini mascara, primer, lip and cheek stain, moisturiser and a hydrating foundation.
The experience: Our favourite item was the Porefessional balm, which is slightly tinted and can be worn on its own or under makeup to give a smooth finish. The foundation was a nice consistency, but the colour wasn’t suited to our skin tone.
Verdict: A winner! There’s zero hassle and it’s such a nice treat to receive a package in the mail. There’s no real downside, other than the potential mismatch of foundation shades. Dhs239 for three months, Dhs449 for six months, Dhs849 for 12 months. www.glambox.me (04 455 8699). Nails Glamnails
This company provides first class nail and beauty services in your own home. Whether you opt for a classic or spa manicure and pedicure, acrylic or gel extensions, or even a touch of nail art, it can all be done from the comfort of your sofa.
The set-up: Book online or give them a call and the GlamNails ladies will arrive at your home (or wherever else you choose) with everything you could possibly need for a proper pampering session. After lugging a footbath, bowls, lotions, towels and suitcases filled with OPI nail polish into our tiny living room, our apartment resembled a mini-spa in itself.
The experience: Not having to get changed, get in the car and head off to a salon is amazing, and we enjoyed our treatment dressed in our pyjamas. Despite being a mobile service, we didn’t feel like we missed out on anything, as the ladies brought so much equipment with them. We tried the Argan oil treatment, too, and it left our hair super soft.
Verdict: Great choice of colours, professional staff and reasonable rates. If you have an appointment after your treatment, bear in mind that the oil is left on your head to be rinsed out at your leisure. Spa Manicure Dhs130; Argan Oil Treatment Dhs170. DIY treatments Don’t fret if you’re short on space, time or dirhams. Stephen Wagner, spa director at Talise Spa Madinat Jumeirah, gives us the lowdown on some DIY pampering solutions that you can do at home relatively cost free.
DIY face mask: Runny honey is a budget solution to moisturising, toning and firming your face. All you need to do is warm some honey and use it as a face mask for ten minutes – it’s so easy and effective.
Energise: Boost energy and circulation first thing with an acupressure mat for ten minutes. Place the acupressure mat under your back after you wake up or stand on it while you brush your teeth every morning. Done as part of your regular morning routine, it will relax, energise and improve circulation as well as stimulate internal organs.
Steam: Treat your skin to a herbal facial steam. Pour boiling hot water into a large bowl and add essential oil for dry to normal skin – rose and lavender are a good choice; for oily skin, use rosemary. Place a towel over your head and keep your face over the bowl, then allow the steam to gather around your face. Five minutes is enough for the pores to open.
Ice-lollies: Compressed ice under your eyes is great for refreshing your eyes. It eliminates dark circles and banishes puffiness. Make your own ice-lollies by placing cocktail sticks in water-filled ice cube containers and then allow to freeze.
