Five Steps to Heaven at The Spa, The Palace Downtown
The promise: You get to choose five treatments from a list of nine and also get full-day access to the hotel’s pool overlooking Burj Lake, as well as the Oriental bath house, which features a steam room and Jacuzzi.
The experience: Stepping into the sanctuary of The Spa, the treatment gets underway with a body scrub and after a quick rinse off, our skin feels super soft and we relax back onto the bed for a back massage.
The pressure is just right and the therapist uses a variety of techniques to get rid of the tension in our shoulders and lower back. Next, the therapist begins the facial sensation eye treatment, both of which are carried out using only natural products to suit our slightly sensitive skin. As the products get to work, we enjoy the magical hands of our therapist as she performs a scalp ritual. Feeling much closer to heaven indeed, we’re shown to the relaxation room and sip tasty mint tea and revel in the bliss. Our only complaint is that after 100 minutes of treatments we’re a little peckish – a few dates wouldn’t have gone amiss. We spend the rest of the afternoon using the facilities and the pool is definitely worth a visit, with private cabanas and a gorgeous view of the Burj Khalifa.
The vibe: The spa is very tranquil, the pool has a bit more atmosphere but is still extremely chilled-out.
Best for: The spa has strict separate floors for men and women so this is one to do with a best mate or a visiting parent. Dhs600, The Spa at The Palace, Downtown Dubai (04 428 7805).
Wellbeing package at Spa Zen, Radisson Blu
The promise: This 90-minute package includes a half-hour body scrub or facial as well as an hour-long anti-stress or aromatic massage. The deal also includes buffet lunch and all-day access to the swimming pool, wet facilities and gym.
The experience: We decide on the one-hour aromatic massage with a half-hour Pevonia facial and the treatment begins with a consultation with the therapist to discuss focus areas for the deep-cleansing facial which is beneficial for all skin types. The treatment consists of steaming, exfoliation, and intense deep cleaning for clogged pores. After assessing our skin, the therapist gently massages a tailor-made product into our face and neck, followed by a therapist-selected mask that balances and treats skin blemishes. Pevonia Botanica products were used, which are natural and organic. This is followed up with the Zen Royal massage with lemongrass and mandarin scents. Using Thai, Hilot and Swedish techniques, we feel more relaxed and have less tension in problem areas.
The vibe: Rooms are modern and cosy with heated beds, allowing you to fully relax and unwind. The spa caters to both men and women with separate changing facilities. At the pool there is a younger crowd and a lively atmosphere.
Best for: Groups of friends to enjoy a spa day. Dhs550. 90 minutes plus all day access to facilities. Valid daily, subject to availability. Spa Zen, Radisson Royal Hotel, Dubai, 7th floor, Sheikh Zayed Road (04 308 0531).
Spa to Infinity package at The Spa, The Address Dubai Marina
The promise: Available only on weekdays (which could pose a problem for busy nine-to-fivers), the Spa to Infinity deal involves a combination of four treatments to take you to the zen zone before you’re left to unwind at free will in the slick surrounds of the rooftop infinity pool.
The experience: After a warm welcome we’re lead to the treatment room, where we de-robe. A bamboo tea exfoliation is applied in swift, purposeful movements over every inch of our body, removing dead skin cells and softening coarse spots in the process. The next thing we hear is the running water of the rain shower and we’re lead into the bathroom to rinse off. Unfortunately, it’s cool when we get in and after an unsuccessful struggle with the taps we have to get the therapist to come in and adjust the temperature. Back on the massage bed, we lie face down and our therapist starts a back, neck and shoulder massage, applying just the amount of medium-to-strong pressure, which works out the tension we have accumulated at our desk all week. She then begins a green tea facial, using a spongey device to clean our skin before rollerballs are applied to massage in moisturising cream. It finishes with a truly blissful scalp massage and we catch ourselves dozing off. Afterwards we head up to the pool, where we relax in a cabana fit for a queen. Our only gripe is that lunch isn’t included.
The vibe: The pool attracts a younger crowd and there are no kids.
Best for: Both friends and couples. Dhs750. The Spa at The Address, Dubai Marina (04 436 7777).
