Dubai experts share 20 tips for getting your body ready for summer
Develop a healthy mind to get to a healthy body Xenia Giannaki, motivational speaker and life coach at Lifeshare, offers her advice for developing the right mind-set for body confidence.
The powerful ‘smiley’ Draw a smiley face on the back of your hand, and every time you fail to think positively take a look at it, and smile back. Let it be a reminder to yourself to smile. Smiling is contagious, so use its power to change your mood instantly and move away from negativity to positive alignment towards your future goals.
Say ‘a good word’ to your mirror Have you ever looked in the mirror in the morning gratefully, for waking up on this unique new day to pursue your goals? Say to yourself, ‘Good morning. It’s a good day and together we can make it better.’
Move away from toxic people Try to stay away from people who zap your energy. They need the therapist, not you. If you need more positive energy, get some from people who have it. Your journey to success doesn’t need doubts, fear or negativity. www.lifeshare.gr/en
Cut out the wrong foods Christopher James Clark, nutrition and paleo food expert and author of Nutritional Grail, advises reducing sugar to start seeing changes in your physique. ‘Fat and sugar are vitally important, but commonly misunderstood. Modern research now shows sugar to be the real culprit. Sugar goes by many names, including corn syrup, agave, and honey, dates, and fruit juice. That’s right, dried fruits and fruit juice are in fact counterproductive, when consumed excessively. It’s far better to eat whole, fresh fruit. Restricting sugar is an essential step towards achieving the beach body you desire.’
Stay hydrated Nutritionist Clark says water is key to keeping cool in the sun. ‘Coconut water is an excellent choice. It’s full of natural electrolytes, which help with rehydration. However, coconut water also has calories and some natural sugars. It’s an excellent substitute for sports drinks or fruit juice, but not for good old-fashioned water. It’s great to drink one serving of coconut water each day, but your primary drink should be water. www.christopherjamesclark.com
Shape up and sculpt your body Nora Hickman and Hayley Houk, fitness instructors at Physique 57, recommend exercising frequently to see results. ‘Regular exercise is critical. One way to think about this is to work out more days than not, meaning at least four days a week. A push-up plank series can challenge your whole body and have you feeling sculpted by the time you hit the sand and surf. Alternate between planks, side planks, push-ups and triceps push-ups. Any abdominal work such as standard sit-ups or ‘curls’, as we teach at Physique 57, can help get those abs feeling taut prior to hitting the beach.’ From Dhs125 per class. City Walk, Al Wasl Road, www.physique57.com/dubai (04 344 8757).

Guys, don’t just focus on the six-pack ‘Six-pack muscles are the exterior layer, not necessarily the supportive muscles of your core,’ say Nora Hickman and Hayley Houk at Physique 57. ‘One exercise that also works these muscles is a standard ‘bicycle’ – lie down with a neutral and supported back and twist opposite elbow to incoming knee to get every angle of your six pack working and tightening.’
Go for a liquid breakfast Detox Delight founder Astrid Purzer says to lay off the big breakfasts. ‘Treat your body to a vitamin-packed juice. Prepare a large green smoothie or juice – around 750ml – made with leafy vegetables such as spinach, Swiss chard or kale, and drink it all morning to keep you going until lunchtime. The high-quality nutrients in a green juice are all you need.’ ‘Stay Liquid Till Lunch-Box’ delivered as a three-day package containing six bottles (three ‘Juice Delight Green’ and three ‘Juice Delight Super Green’) from Dhs370. Detox Delight, Gold & Diamond Park, Sheikh Zayed Road, www.detox-delight.ae (04 338 3565).

Shop for your swimwear in the morning Stylist Kelly Lundberg suggest you hit the mall early when doing your new swimwear shopping spree. ‘You feel less bloated, more fresh and awake,’ she says. ‘When it comes to body shapes, there are tons of options out there for everyone. I suggest smaller-busted women go for something with padding and detail on the bust, such as frills or prints. Victoria’s Secret has nice collections for slim physiques. Athletic builds look fab in one-shoulder swimsuits as they break up the lines. If you’re quite petite, choose something with a high leg to elongate yours. Curvy women should go for options with support and ruching to flatter their shape. Check stores such as Debenhams or Praias in Mall of the Emirates for a good range.’ Kelly Lundberg’s one-day masterclass in how to become a professional stylist costs Dhs5,500 throughout June. www.kellylundberg.co (04 455 8475).
Choose a bold new bikini Dani Miller at Hamac, The Beach, JBR, says to make a splash with vibrant colours. ‘Buying swimwear this season is about being bold. Hot colours such as cobalt blue, emerald green and pillar box red are no longer considered clashing. They marry together and can create wonderful geometric and floral prints, like with the Gottex Geo Bikini. The shape of the bikini doesn’t need to be boring, either. Try a cropped rash vest to wear when surfing or a handkerchief ruffle top to even out bigger hips.’ Hamac The Beach Boutique, The Beach, JBR, www.hamacdubai.com (04 447 7904).
Keep your feet happy Keep your feet comfy and stylish as you hit the beach, FitFlop’s new collection of beach ready sandals relieve pressure on the soles of the feet. From Dhs285, FitFlop Store Dubai Mall, Downtown Dubai, www.fitflop.com (055 440 0264).

Don’t neglect your hair Keep your crowning glory looking its best no matter how high the humidity gets. Try out the Sachajuan hair protection range and hair perfume. This Swedish brand uses marine algae and other nutrients to fortify the hair and protect it from the effects of sun exposure and the sand. The serum works like a sunblock for your hair, while the after-sun restores and hydrates. Finish off with a floral scented hair perfume that refreshes your tresses. Dhs120 Sachajuan Hair in the Sun, and Hair After the Sun, Dhs300 Protective Hair Perfume. Available at Bloomingdale’s The Dubai Mall, Downtown Dubai (04 339 9383) and Harvey Nichols, Mall of the Emirates, Al Barsha, (04 409 8888).
Jazz up your cover-up Dani Miller suggests ditching the plain kaftans and going boho for your post beach cover-up: ‘The cover-ups this season are following a wonderful crochet trend and the bohemian look is definitely the best for the beach. The Muche et Muchette poncho is a great example, and you can team all your looks with a pair of flip flops and you’re set for any beach break.’
Get shades to suit your face and needs It might be convenient to pick up a cheap pair of plastic sunnies from the shops, but when you’re having fun in the sun you need to protect your peepers. Martine Larroque at Maui Jim, makers of premium polarised sunglasses, says consider your lifestyle and face shape when buying a new pair. ‘For long days in the sun choose a lens that fully cups your eye for maximum protection. Wider temples will block additional light from the sides. Look for features such as embedded rubber in the temples for a secure grip and adjustable rubber nose pads for stability. When choosing a frame, start by analysing your facial shape. If it’s oval, almost any style will look good. If your face is round, look for frames that make your face appear longer. Minimise the curves and choose styles with a double brow or higher temples to pull the eye upwards. Square faces do well in soft, curvy styles. Diamond and triangular faces look terrific in rimless styles that are oval or have a slight cat-eye.’
Guys, dress for comfort Kelly Lundberg says beach style isn’t just for women. ‘Generally if a man is slightly shorter, I’d recommend he stays away from long board shorts to the knee, because the proportions won’t work. When it comes to style, a good choice for guys is a good linen shirt, rather than a polo shirt, worn with shorts to take you from the beach to the bar.’
